Conducting Fraud Investigations

Corruption, financial statement fraud and asset misappropriation in the corporate setting take many forms and may include bribery of public officials, understating liabilities and expenses, accelerating revenues, payments to ghost vendors and a host of other types of fraud. Forensic accountants play a critical role in uncovering and proving even the most complex cases.

• In the course of testing a company’s compliance systems, uncovered an embezzlement scheme involving individuals from Sales, Accounting and Management. Identified the weaknesses in the Company’s control environment and recommended mitigating control measures.
• Investigated privately held oilfield services company’s CFO suspected of misappropriating corporate assets and mischaracterizing transactions in financial statements related to critical debt covenants. Uncovered multiple schemes used to misappropriate cash and unrecorded transactions.
• Managed a financial statement fraud investigation for a global manufacturing company. Uncovered schemes to manipulate the income statements and balance sheets by fabricating the inputs to the cost accounting system.
• Managed a financial statement fraud investigation for a pharmaceutical company where allegations of income statement manipulation were present. Quantified the adjustments required to refile several years of 10-Ks and 10-Qs. Served as the primary interface with the independent auditors and outsourced internal audit functions.
• On behalf of the Board of Directors of a municipal transportation entity, investigated the actions of trustees with responsibility for managing all aspects of the medical and dental benefits for active union members and retirees covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Issued a detailed report of findings to the Board covering the analyses performed, our findings and opinions of weaknesses in the Trust’s policies, procedures, and internal controls.
